Finding Peace: The Power of Rest and Gratitude
Hello everyone. Thanks for joining. Thanks for tuning in. And today's word that we're gonna focus on is rest. So five minutes of faith, three portions of scripture, and hopefully one more tool in your toolbox to walk away with. So rest. What is rest? What is not rest? I think a lot of the focus is about sleep today and that we get good sleep, but along with good sleep.
We need to find that point of rest. We need to find that point to bring our anxiety down, to bring our heart rate down, to calm our minds, and to be more focused during the day. Because if we're not focused and we're not in control, we're not trying to be more directed at the objective, then we're gonna get off course.
So a lot of the two words, a lot of the words that come up, two words in particular are anxiety and assurance. I. And anxiety is really going to be difficult to try to overcome if we don't settle on rest. And the first verse that I'd like us to consider, first portion of scripture, Philippians chapter four, verses six and seven.
Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and application with Thanksgiving, let your request be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Now, it's easy enough for me to just sit here and say, Hey, don't be anxious, but it's a real more difficult thing to try and walk that out.
But Paul gives us some ways in which we can do that, like prayer, supplication and Thanksgiving. Prayer, praying on behalf of whatever request that you have, supplication praying for somebody else and giving thanks. What are the things that you're thankful for? Think upon those things. Your family, your home, your neighborhoods, A number of things that you could be grateful for, and that can maybe take that anxiety off of you and or to something that's outside you.
And along with that. First Peter, chapter five, verse seven says a lot of the same thing, and it's much more condensed. Cast all your cares on him, meaning God because he cares for you. So if we're supposed to pray, the Air Force's supposed to pray on behalf of others and give thanks, that should take the focus off of us.
Put the focus onto him, cast our cares to him. Now along with that comes some assurances. So to, again, I don't mean to just say flippantly, and I don't mean to speak without concern about a lot of hurt and grief that happens in the world, but going back to the Old Testament Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six, trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding in all your ways.
Acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. So what does assurance come along with? Trust. In the fire service, you gotta trust the dude that's on your right. You gotta trust the dude that's on your left. Ladies, I don't mean anything different. We gotta trust the people that are on our sides, that are on our crew so that we can actually go home at the end of our tour.
But this is more than just a trust relationally. This is a trust that's just not horizontal. It's one that's vertical and that trust should be on something that's outside of yourself being on the Lord. When you trust in the Lord, when you give your cares to him, when you are praying for others, it's going to take that anxiety off of you and place it onto him because he has told us time and time again, my yoke is easy, my burden is light.
And in doing that, it gives us rest, it gives us assurance, and it allows us to live a life. That is more focused upon him rather than us. So again, from second correction, Philippians chapter two, I read again if there's any encouragement in Christ, any comfort and love, any participation in the spirit, any affection and sympathy.
Complete my joy by being in the same mind, same love being a full accord and of one mind. Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to your own interest, but also to the interests of ours. Stay safe. God bless.
